One of Singapore’s most distinguished writers, Suchen Christine Lim will read from her new novel The River’s Song (Aurora Metro Books) at the Kinokuniya Bookstore in New York, next to Bryant Park, on Sunday, 18 October, 2 pm. She will be reading with Sandro Martini, the author of the race-car driving novel Tracks: Racing the Sun.
Lim was awarded the inaugural Singapore Literature Prize in 1992 and the South East Asia Write Award in 2012. She is a Fellow of the International Writers’ Program, University of Iowa, and the first Singapore writer honored as the university’s International Writer-in-Residence in 2000. Since then, she has held writing residencies in many other countries including the UK, with the Arvon Foundation.
The River’s Song has been described as “a fine, deeply felt saga of lives caught up in progress that’s as heartbreaking as it is hopeful” by Kirkus Reviews, which has awarded the novel the Blue Star for books of exceptional merit. The plot revolves around a pair of star-crossed lovers, Ping, the daughter of Chinatown’s Pipa Queen, and Weng, the voice of the people. Separated by their families, Ping goes to America for her studies whereas Weng is imprisoned for taking part in political protests. When Ping returns to a country transformed by prosperity, she will have to face her former lover and reveal the truth behind their 30-year separation. Read the lyrical opening of the novel here.
