April’s Second Saturdays featured ceramicist Hong-Ling Wee, a Singaporean artist who has been based in New York for more than two decades. Her beautiful presentation – featuring photographs of her ceramic pieces, far-flung travels, family and past career as a scientist for NASA – moved many in the audience to tears. She spoke from the heart about making her life-changing decision to move from the sciences into the arts and how her life now revolves around her passion for making ceramics. Her ceramic pieces are inspired by her personal history and the world around her. Read more about her at ceramicus.com.

Hong-Ling also spoke about the Singapore Arts Festival that she and a group of Singaporeans are organizing in New York City, in September this year, to celebrate Singapore’s 50th year of independence. “Something To Write Home About” will consist of an art exhibition, a film and storytelling evening, a theater production, and a symposium of scholars, thinkers and artists. It promises to be an exciting and illuminating event.

Leading up to Hong-Ling’s presentation, we heard from readers Wun Kuen, Kimberley Lim, Connie Smith and Paul Rozario-Falcone, who entertained us with their original poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction. Second Saturdays continues to be a focal point for both Singaporean and American artists in New York City.

May’s event features James Hannaham, the author of Delicious Foods, a novel about a southern black family trapped in the eponymous industrialized farm. The brunch-and-reading is hosted in a private home in the West Village. It will start at the special time of 1:30 pm. Please RSVP Jee at jeeleong.koh@gmail.com, if you wish to attend. All are welcome.
